Pearls of decorating wisdom

I often get asked about tips and tricks so here are just a few of my pearls of decorating wisdom which might just get you unstuck or spark an idea.

  1. People often get hung up on colour schemes in the first instance but it is far more important to get the furniture plan and circulation right first. So start here and don’t worry about paint until you have the basics.

  2. Play with shapes. Look at your plan and if it's all squares and hard edges, add a curve e.g. a round table, circular rug or elliptical mirror.

  3. Before you buy anything, think about how you could reuse and/or relocate favourite pieces. Neglected things can be given a whole new lease of life just by finding them a new spot in your home.

  4. Antiques and vintage are always a good idea to create a more relaxed, layered look - not everything should be pin-new. When shopping, go prepared with measurements and cash and be decisive; dither and someone else will nab it. If you love something you spot, buy it because if you really love it, you’ll make it work.

  5. If you inherit wooden flooring that is not very lovely, and budgets are tight, paint can be transformative and inexpensive. Be brave and try darker colours rather than assuming ‘white’ is a good choice. Deep blue or green or even rusty brown will earth the spaces. Stick to one colour throughout.

  6. Not everything has to match or tone. Include something that’s a bit ‘off’ or ‘sharp’ in tone. Also consider texture and different materials. A room where everything is upholstered and in the same tone will probably be a little boring.

  7. Just because you can doesn't mean you should – don’t gild the lily. It’s just as important to know when to stop. Less can indeed be more.
